Client Industry: Manufacturing / Industrial Equipment
Application: Powered trolley transporting up to 900kg
Challenge: Frequent tyre failure due to harsh terrain and heavy load
Solution: Custom-engineered polyurethane wheels by Watts Urethane Products
The Problem
A long-standing Watts client was experiencing repeated failures with the rubber tyres on a powered trolley used in their operation. Designed to carry loads up to 900kg, the trolley was used daily across rough outdoor terrain and occasionally needed to mount kerbs.
Despite using tyres rated for the load, the client reported consistent wear and tear issues: splitting, chunking, and premature degradation that led to costly downtime and maintenance.
When our engineers inspected the tyres, they were heavily worn, damaged, and in poor condition. The rubber had cracked and flaked, rendering the wheels unsafe and inefficient. It was clear that the tyres were not up to the task.

The Analysis
Our team identified several contributing factors:
-
Environmental Conditions: The trolley operated over abrasive surfaces and encountered frequent jolts.
-
Material Limitations: The rubber compound appeared to be of a standard grade, not designed for such intense wear.
-
Load Strain: While technically within load limits, the combined weight and impact of daily use were too much for the tyre material.
The result? Standard rubber wheels simply weren’t durable enough for the application.
The Solution: Polyurethane (PU) Tyres
Watts recommended a move to custom polyurethane wheels, tailored to the trolley’s operating conditions.
Why PU?
-
Superior Wear Resistance: PU performs exceptionally well in abrasive environments.
-
Impact Toughness: Unlike traditional rubber, PU resists chunking and splitting, even on rough terrain.
-
Longer Service Life: Reduced replacement frequency saves time and money.
-
Chemical and Weather Resistance: PU holds up better when exposed to oils, UV, and moisture.
-
Consistent Performance: Even under heavy load, PU retains its shape and structure.
The Result
Following the switch to polyurethane tyres, the client saw:
-
A dramatic reduction in wheel failures
-
Improved operational uptime
-
Decreased maintenance costs
-
Increased confidence in day-to-day performance
This case highlights how material choice matters especially in high-demand environments. By upgrading to polyurethane, the client invested in a long-term solution that keeps their operation moving.
