The problem
Our customer was experiencing a problem with the quality of their existing polyurethane parts for a flexible island bollard being manufactured by their incumbent supplier. They were unable to achieve a good quality surface finish and this was causing an issue. The poor quality was leading to them receiving negative feedback from the client and this was something they wanted to solve.
Our solution
At Watts we were able to solve the issue for the client due to our vast experience with Polyurethane as a material. Our full time chemists were able to investigate and identify the reasons for the poor surface finish on the existing product and they were then able to create a plan of action to overcome it.
By using our knowledge and design expertise, we were then able to make superior tooling for casting the product in our in-house tool room. Obviously, we had to ensure that the new bollard matched the existing design as there were already bollards in place that they would go alongside.
The end result was a flexible bollard design that had a superior finish which more than met customer expectations.
In this project, we were also able to pin point other headaches to solve them as we like to look at every angle. There were other modular parts that were being painted on the original design and so we came up with an alternative solution to create a fully cast product, just in a different colour, which was able to save the customer time and money in not having to paint the parts themselves on site.
